The Truth About Ear Piercing Risks
And How to Keep Your Little One’s Ears Happy and Healthy!
At Peekaboo Piercing, we believe ear piercing should be safe, clean, and special. As nurse practitioners (and parents, too!), we take pride in providing not only a gentle piercing experience—but also the know-how families need afterward to prevent problems and keep ears healthy.
Let’s talk about a few common risks—and how our expert aftercare helps keep them from popping up!
Embedded Earrings (When the Earring Tries to Hide!)
If an earring back is too tight or ears swell a little, the earring can press into the skin—sometimes getting stuck underneath. This is called an embedded earring, and it’s no fun.
Our Tip: We leave just the right amount of breathing room behind the earlobe and teach you how to check placement gently at home. We also teach you proper hygiene to reduce this risk greatly. No guesswork—just simple steps.
-
Piercing Bumps (A Little Bump in the Road)
Tiny bumps near the piercing—often called piercing bubbles—are pretty common and usually not dangerous. They can show up if earrings are bumped, twisted, or handled with dirty hands. They typically show up within the first few weeks of a new piercing.
Our Tip: We give you and your child a clear, gentle routine that’s easy to follow. Think: clean hands, no flipping or twisting, and lots of love—not over-cleaning!
-
Infection (Let’s Keep Germs Away)
Infections may look like redness, swelling, warmth, or even pus. They’re usually caused by touching the piercing with unwashed hands or skipping cleaning steps—not the piercing itself.
Our Tip: We walk you through a simple cleaning routine and send you home with clear instructions—and if you’re ever unsure, remember we’re just a message or phone call away during the healing phase.
- Allergic Reactions (Not All Earrings Are Created Equal)
Sometimes, ears react to certain metals—especially nickel, which can cause itching, redness, or bumps.
Our Tip: We only use medical-grade, hypoallergenic earrings made for sensitive ears—because your child deserves the safest sparkle! And we help you choose the right material for their skin. Its also important to remember to avoid using low quality earrings during the 1st year after your new piercing. You want use high quality- titanium, medical grade plastic, surgical steel or stainless stee; 14kt gold or higher. Avoid using sterling silver, nickel, or copper-based earrings.
- Keloids (Rare but Important to Know)
A keloid is a raised, firm scar that grows larger than the original piercing area. They’re rare, but some people (especially with a family history of keloids) may be more likely to get them. They typically form 3-12 months after your piercing.
Our Tip: Before we pierce, we’ll ask about family history and explain what to watch for. If there’s a higher risk, we’ll help you weigh the decision and offer guidance tailored to your child.
Why Most Problems Happen (It’s Not the Piercing!)
It’s easy to worry about the piercing process—but most issues come from what happens afterward. That’s why we don’t just pierce and wave goodbye—we partner with you through the healing process.
